This special walk, created for the 2023 GM Walking Festival, connects Bury town centre with Ramsbottom to the north. It includes part of the GM Ringway – Greater Manchester’s walking trail – and the opportunity to view of travel on, the East Lancashire Railway. There are options to break the 9.5-mile route into a shorter and easier walk by returning on the railway from Burrs Country Park (2 miles) or Summerseat (3.75 miles).
Highlights include Burrs Country Park, the Irwell and Holcombe valleys, Redisher Woods with its waterfall, views from Peel Tower, and the attractive town of Ramsbottom.
Most of the paths are well made, but good fitness and walking boots are required to tackle the ascent and descent of Holcombe Hill on the optional second half of the walk.
The GM Ringway – Greater Manchester’s walking trail – is designed to be accessed
by public transport and explores the best of the region’s countryside and heritage. The GM Ringway project has been made possible with support from Heritage Lottery Fund, CPRE the countryside charity and the Ramblers.
The East Lancashire Railway is a 12.5-mile (20-km) heritage railway line that features stunning scenery and seven stations packed with things to do. For more details, visit eastlancsrailway.org.uk.
