This introductory ‘walk for all’ samples a level and step-free section of the GM Ringway – Greater Manchester’s walking trail. The full route is only 3.5 miles long and is suitable for families, those new to country walking, or anyone who fancies a leisurely afternoon stroll in fine scenery. The first 2 miles are suitable for all wheelchair and mobility-scooters, being on pavements and a wide hard-surfaced wide track around the lake. From the Pavilion Café onwards, the lakeside track is made of compacted gravel and is uneven in places. However, it is an easy matter to follow the outward route back to the sailing club, where both parts of the group can meet up for a drink in one of the cafes or pubs.

Hollingworth Lake is the largest body of water in Greater Manchester. It is known for its varied flora and fauna and its lovely views of the South Pennines Regional Park.

The GM Ringway – Greater Manchester’s walking trail – is designed to be accessed by public transport and explores the best of the region’s countryside and heritage. The GM Ringway project has been made possible with support from Heritage Lottery Fund, CPRE the countryside charity and the Ramblers. For more details, visit GMRingway.org.

The South Pennines Park is a park with a difference. Covering 460 square mile
s of spectacular uplands, it takes in lush, sheltered valleys, drystone walls and urban fringes. It’s a wild and wonderful place, home to rare birds, vast peat and heather moorlands and big skies. For more details, visit southpenninespark.org.
