This walk is one of ten exciting routes designed to help you explore some of Trafford’s most beautiful countryside and parks on foot.
This route takes in a secluded area of the Mersey Valley. Enjoy the woodland paths and meadow pastures of Urmston Meadows and venture past Barrowfield Farm onto Old Ees Brook. Once here, walkers can explore the beauty of the flood meadow in spring and enjoy panoramic views of the River Mersey. The route returns via Urmston Meadows where walkers can continue along the surfaced path towards Riverside Drive or go in search of Urmston’s majestic oak, the ‘climbing tree’.
Accessibility and facilities
According to the walk leaflet, the paths around Urmston Meadows are surfaced. Elsewhere paths are soft underfoot and prone to becoming muddy but are suitable for off-road cyclists and horse riders. The leaflet states that Urmston Meadows offers access for wheelchairs and prams, while according to the Visit Manchester website, there is a circular walk (of less than 1 hour) with benches and wheelchair access. We have therefore graded this route as at least partially accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs but have not been able to verify conditions on the ground.
The nearest pubs and cafes are in Urmston town centre, only about 200 metres north of the main start point offering toilet facilities for customers.
How to get there
The leaflet suggests two start points: either Riverside Drive (given here as the main start point and only a short walk from Chassen Road train station) or Cedar Drive (the alternative start point on this page). According to the National Rail website, Chassen Road station offers step-free access to and from the platforms.
