Saddleworth Circuit

Overview

This is a good walk, albeit with one or two steeper sections. The route takes in the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, country lanes, weavers’ cottages and Saddleworth Church before returning through the village of Uppermill. There are a number of options to shorten the route along the way or to avoid some of the hills.

The village of Uppermill lies nestled in the hills in the middle of the area known as Saddleworth – a characterful district that was formerly part of Yorkshire. Uppermill is a busy, thriving village with lovely canal towpath walks, many small independent shops and plenty of places to eat and drink.

Accessibility

Because of the varied terrain and gradients involved, this route is not rated as suitable for wheelchair and pushchair-users. There may, however, be sections close to the canal and the centre of Uppermill that are accessible, though we have not been able to verify conditions on the ground.

How to get there

The walk start point is served by buses from Oldham Mumps (served by Metrolink trams) and is also only about 1 mile / 1.6 km from Greenfield train station.
