Welcome to Out on Sunday – a gay walking group based in and around Greater Manchester mainly, but not exclusively, for members of the LGBT community – we aim to be inclusive and welcome anyone age 18+ who identifies either as LGBT or as an ally of the community. We have been walking since 1998 and our aim is to encourage regular exercise and provide an opportunity to socialise and establish a network of friends.
Every year we organise a walking weekend in a different part of the country and each December we get together for a festive meal in Manchester.
You’re very welcome to come along and try a couple of walks with us – for details of how you can do this please visit our website.
Our Walks
The group walks in all the boroughs of Greater Manchester and will sometimes travel further afield eg to Derbyshire / Peak District; Lancashire or West Yorkshire. Our popular summer walking weekends take place in different parts of the country each year.
Our walks are all led by volunteers and are generally between 5 and 8 miles long, most of them are either ‘easy’ or ‘moderate’ although we do offer some more challenging walks so that there is something for everyone. We walk pretty much every Sunday during the spring and summer and every other Sunday during the autumn and winter. As a rule our walks will be within an hour’s drive of central Manchester but we occasionally venture a bit further afield. Details of the walks are published on our website and include information about the walk as well as a basic risk assessment and, where available, details of public transport. We encourage our members to car share where possible.
We generally meet up at 12:00 or 12:30 and our walks range from about 5 to 8 miles in length. We aim to walk at a fairly leisurely pace so we will normally be out for 3 – 4+ hours.
Our walks are graded for difficulty by the walk leaders and the details provided by them allow walkers to decide which walks will be suitable for them. Generally, you should be comfortable walking on the level at a pace of around 2 miles / hour or so.
