Manchester Pedestrian Club

Oldham, Rochdale

10+ miles

Sat 2nd May 2026 at 10:30

Walk description:

This 11-12 mile linear walk was undertaken by the Manchester Pedestrian Club 100 years ago, in May 1926, from Greenfield to Littleborough via Denshaw. It is the longest of three walks offered by the MPC. An interesting and varied linear walk, with canal and river paths, a bit of minor road, then tracks across moorland, including some steep and rocky, this is a walk for those who like walking 12 miles including across moorland.

Route: From Greenfield station, along canal to Uppermill, to Dobcross, along River Tame via Delph to Denshaw. Maybe detouring via a minor road near Denshaw to avoid marshy areas. Up and over the watershed, down to Piethorn Reservoir, along past Ogden reservoir. Over or under M62 and thence to Littleborough either near Hollingworth Lake or across Clegg Moor. Route might be varied on the day, by consent of walkers.

6-7 hours walk. Please bring lunch and good walking footwear and attire suitable to the weather.

The Manchester Pedestrian Club was founded in 1903 and has arranged walks nearly every week since then, over 5600 walks in total – most of which have been recorded. See “http://mpcwalking.org.uk/”.
