GM Walking and Wheeling Fund Case Studies

The GM Walking and Wheeling Fund (GMWWF) Grants programme offers grants of up to £7,000 to voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations to deliver projects to get more people walking and wheeling.

The investment supports the GM Moving priority to enable the greatest number of people possible to walk, wheel and cycle routinely, for pleasure, for travel, for themselves and for the environment.

The GM Walking and Wheeling Fund, supported by GM NHS, has been running since 2020 and seen an number of individuals, groups, and organisations support more people to enjoy walking and wheeling regularly.

Together Dementia – Winter walks project: Together Dementia Support, a charity which supports people across Manchester and North Trafford to live positively with dementia.

Future Directions – Litter-picking superheroes: Oldham-based social care provider Future Directions runs a friendship group for people with learning disabilities, mental health needs, and autism spectrum.

Stories from 2020:

The Fed: Walking groups to support anyone wishing to join including people living with a range of mental health conditions.

Burnside Centre: The centre set up a beginners walking group called Sole Steppers for its service users.

Manchester Deaf Centre: Set up a fortnightly walking group for deaf, hard of hearing and deafened people living in GM

Milltown to Mountains: A partnership between two Oldham-based organisations, UProjects and WiFi North West

Bolton Lads and Girls Group: A youth charity that works hard to transform the lives and opportunities of young people in Bolton

Angels of Hope for Women: Angels of Hope for Women runs an outreach service for women and girls who have lived through harmful situations.

Speakeasy: Speakeasy is for people living with aphasia; an issue with some or all aspects of communication after a stroke or brain injury.
