Hurst Clough Nature Walk

Overview

This is a short walk around Hurst Clough Local Nature Reserve, Hattersley. Hurst Clough is an extension of Great Wood, from which it is separated by the Manchester-Glossop train line. There are footpaths through Hurst Wood making it easy to explore and benches where you can rest. If you want to explore further, the Trans Pennine Trail crosses the clough.

Pupils from Arundale Primary School worked with rangers to create this trail.

Accessibility

The leaflet states that “There are lots of footpaths to explore but they can be muddy… Some paths are too narrow and bumpy for buggies.” The route is therefore not graded as wheelchair or pushchair-friendly. There are no toilets or refreshments en route, though the route is not far away from Broadbottom or Hattersley with their services.

How to get there

Two access points are given. The first is on Broadbottom Road (shown as the main start point here). The leaflet indicates that there is a “Waggon” pub here, but we believe this has since closed. This start point is served by buses and is only 1 km (0.6 miles) from Broadbottom train station. The alternative start point given on this page is on Chain Bridge Road.
