Overview

The Saddleworth Village Trails are a great way to explore the historic villages of Saddleworth and learn more about the history of the area. Delph derives its name from the Old English word ‘Delf’ meaning ‘quarry’. This was in particular reference to the bakestone pits to the north of the village, which were renowned for providing stone that locals would cook food on.

The longer of the two routes is more adventurous, ascending to Harrop Edge with its dramatic views and visiting the site of the Roman fort at Castleshaw.

Accessibility and facilities

Because of the mixed terrain involved, this route is not rated as suitable for wheelchair-users and families with pushchairs. While there are no public toilets along the way, the route gives access to local cafes and pubs.

The walk starts from the main car park in Delph (point 1 on the map), which benefits from frequent bus connections to Oldham.
