Monton and Roe Green Loopline Heritage Trail

Overview

Railways, coal, physics, lighthouses and barges… You’ll find all these and more on this self-guided walk around Monton, the Roe Green loopline and the Bridgewater Canal.

This circular walk begins and ends in Monton village and follows the ‘loopline’, the old route of the Roe Green railway line, before returning along the towpath of the Bridgewater Canal.

Accessibility and facilities

The walk starts on Monton Green in Monton village, served by frequent buses. In addition, Patricroft train station is only a short walk to the south along the Bridgewater Canal.

According to the leaflet, the walk is accessible for wheelchair users. It also states that in wet weather the path alongside the canal can become very muddy. However, we believe that since the leaflet was written, the surface has been improved. While we are therefore classing the walk as wheelchair and pushchair-accessible, we have not been able to verify conditions on the ground.

There are cafes and pubs in both Monton and Worsley villages. A list of accessible toilets can found on the Salford Council website.

How to get there

The walk starts on Monton Green in Monton village, served by frequent buses. In addition, Patricroft train station (unfortunately without step-free access) is only a short walk to the south along the Bridgewater Canal. According to the leaflet, there is a car park on Monton Road to the east of the walk start.
