This is the third and shortest of three walks offered by the Manchester Pedestrian Club in this Festival. This 4 mile walk takes us up the side of the valley, around the interesting rock formation of Orchan Rocks, and across the heather to the legendary Bridestones – rich with local folk-lore – before heading back down to Todmorden. Great views.
Community: A century ago, workers and others in the community of Todmorden and other towns used to walk up to these rocks and similar places to escape the valley smog, up into the cleaner air of the moors, using paved paths paid for by local philamthropist. The Yorkshire-Lancashire border used to go through the middle of the town hall!
The Manchester Pedestrian Club was founded in 1903 and has arranged walks nearly every week since then, over 5600 walks in total – most of which have been recorded. See http://mpcwalking.org.uk/
