Walking Grant funding: Covid 19 success stories
#1 Cartwheel Arts
This is the first in a series of blogs looking at how voluntary and community organisations helped with funding from GM Walking Grants, have adapted to help their community during Covid 19.
Designed in response to COVID-19, to promote creative exploration and wellbeing whilst in lockdown or isolation. Cartwheel Arts recognised the need to still support the communities they work with and have adapted their original project idea to support individuals and their families during lockdown.
Cartwheel Arts Charity is encouraging kids and families to walk during lockdown.
Cartwheel Arts promotes social inclusion, cohesion, diversity and regeneration through community participation in vibrant, innovative, arts projects.
Working in Rochdale, Oldham, Bury, Wigan and North Manchester, as well as promoting the development of the arts and examples of good practice across the North West.
The community charity aims to address social issues such as improved mental health and community cohesion by encouraging access to arts recognising the positive process of creativity. Wants to celebrate communities and that everyone has a story that is worth sharing.
New online programs
‘Draw The Day’ is Cartwheels new online programme that is full of fun activities to join in with at home. Designed in response to COVID-19, to promote creative exploration and wellbeing whilst in lockdown or isolation.
Find out more The activities include an EXPLORE THE DAY booklet full of walking activities to make every day an adventure for kids and families at home. It has the classics, including ‘the floor is lava’ and making maps as well as a few creative ones such as poem writing and making wind-catchers.
The programme starts Monday 4th May and breaks down into three strands with walking activities are released every Wednesday @ 10am.
A physical pack has also been created for those without access to digital resources. 5,000 copies will be distributed to refugees and asylum seekers, young carers and families in Rochdale.
Cartwheel are encouraging individuals to share their work and be exhibited on their Draw The Day online gallery!
Originally Cartwheel Arts accessed the GM Walking grants scheme to develop a walking trial and arts activity as part of the annual Darnhill Festival which brings people together in celebration. The festival was planned for 1st July but will now be postponed. It’s hoped the fund will still be used to help support a trial when the festival is next run.
