Walking Grant funding: Covid 19 success stories
#5 Glossop Milestones

This is the fifth in a series of blogs looking at how voluntary and community organisations helped with funding from GM Walking Grants, have adapted to help their community during Covid 19.

Here’s GM Walks Q&A with Glossop Milestones

  • Context / overview of what you do:

Glossop Milestones, is a series of family friendly walking routes around the area of Glossopdale. The routes are varying in ability from completely accessible short park loops to more strenuous routes up into the Peak National Park. The routes are all self-lead, by use of an O.S map app link and a downloadable map and description. The maps will also be available as a booklet for people to use. All the routes have been signposted using rocks that have been decorated by children.  The shorter walks are also accompanied by a story, which leads you around the route.

  • Why did you apply for the grant and what are you wanting to achieve with this approach?

We applied for the grant to enable us to print booklets of the maps, so that these can be available to everyone, they will be available in various places around the town and free to ensure people have full access to them. They will also be distributed to the schools to encourage children to take their families out for a walk.

  • Who did you hope to engage with?

The routes are designed for all abilities to engage with the whole community. From young families to older people.

  • How the approach has been adapted?

The approach has been adapted to ensure we include some fully accessible routes as well as routes suitable for the more active community members.

  • Any examples of how it’s working so far?

Here are a few quotes from happy walkers.

“We have just come back from the route around Whitfield and Gnat’s hole. Fab route and found 5 out of 6 rocks.”

“Jenn – yes we’ve done one today. Really good idea x”

“We did the Whiteley Nab circular today. Thanks for another great route Helen Thornhill 🥰”

“⭐ Our first mapped walk from That Counts was a hit! ⭐”

“Thanks for the route planning, we’ve never been up that way before & thoroughly enjoyed it 👍”

  • Where can we find more information, and your contact details?
