#8 STUFF

This is the eighth in a series of blogs looking at how voluntary and community organisations helped with funding from GM Walking Grants, have adapted to help their community during Covid 19.

Here’s GM Walks Q&A with STUFF

  • Context / overview of what you do:

WE PROVIDE MENTAL HEALTH AND ALCOHOL SUPPORT FOR PEOPLE IN THE STOCKPORT AREA WHO ARE SUFFERING AND RECOVERING FROM A RANGE OF MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS. WE OFFER A RANGE OF SOCIAL, THERAPEUTIC, LEISURE, VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES /ACTIVITIES THAT TAKE PLACE IN MENTAL HEALTH COMMUNITY SETTINGS AND THROUGHOUT THE WIDER COMMUNITY RECOGNISING INDIVIDUALITY AND SUPPORT PEOPLE ON THEIR RECOVERY JOURNEY.

  • Why did you apply for the grant and what are you wanting to achieve with this approach?

Our application to yourselves for the grant was to empower, encourage and motivate people around physical activity and also enhancing their mental health and wellbeing through our Walk and Talk psychotherapeutic “Small bubble, 6 people” walking group.

  • Who did you hope to engage with?

Our intention was to engage with people predominantly suffering from severe and enduring mental health conditions including also those with life limiting, chronic illness and those that may suffer from alcoholism.

  • How the approach has been adapted?

We have adapted our approach to fully comply with current government restrictions on meeting. We have also made provision for those of our members who may not be feeling confident, the facility of using PPE i.e. face masks, gloves and face shields which are offered to anyone who feels more confident in using them.

  • Any examples of how it’s working so far?

Up to date we have met every Wednesday at 5.30 pm at a central park location in Stockport, we have progressed from one to two hour walks and we intend to moving to satellite locations as and when requested by members of the local community.
