Overview

This walk is one of a series of fifteen Jubilee Legacy Walks designed to celebrate the richness and diversity of Wigan Borough’s green space, and provide a lasting reminder of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations of 2012.

Amberswood is a former open cast mining site that has now been transformed into one of the borough’s best green spaces and one of the key sites within Greenheart. The route begins and ends at Amberswood and passes through sites reclaimed and transformed from old industrial activity and long-established public parks.

Over 4 miles / 6 km of paths link areas of woodland, wildflower meadows, grasslands and wetlands. The Friends of Amberswood community group work with Groundwork and Wigan Council to help manage the site.

Low Hall Local Nature Reserve is rich in wildlife and habitats and is a magnet for nesting birds in spring and summer. Visit the Friends group website for more information.

Accessibility

Routes are mainly along hard surfaced footpaths, but some areas may be softer after rain. As the leaflet states that there is only limited access for wheelchairs, prams and cycles, we have not graded this route as wheelchair and pushchair-friendly.
