About Us

We ‘Failsworth and Oldham Walking and Unity Group’ are a friendly, open to all walking group that aims to support our local community by providing regular ‘walks and talks’ for anyone to attend. Our group is most active on the Facebook app, with over 1200 members of all different ages from 20-70+, we provide walks for all abilities.

Since starting the group in July 2023, we have partaken in a range of community activities, including: gardening at our local church, hosting mental health/ wellbeing events, collections of clothing for the homeless and visiting local elderly care homes to get to know the residents. We are also working alongside ‘Shine-Manchester’ to do a shoe box appeal for homeless people in the Manchester area at Christmas time.

We have several sponsors including: Norris Scaffolding, Brunch and Lunch, Cracking Racking and Sall Electrical. We have been lucky enough to receive several donations via our sponsors, including jumpers and t shirts with our logo printed on and also high vis jackets for when winter is among us and the evenings are darker.

We have also formed a partnership with Bee Adventures, this gives us an amazing opportunity to hire their mini buses, to help us with travel to walks that are out of the local area.

Our Walks

Walks are available to attend weekly and suitable for all, with shorter local walks in the week and longer, more advanced walks on weekends.
Week day walks are generally done on a Tuesday and Thursday evening or Wednesday early morning and are local to Failsworth.
Most Saturdays we do a coffee morning where we meet and have an optional stroll around the local park.

Sundays are when we plan longer walks/hikes where we will usually drive to a different destination each week, car sharing is always planned before a walk and all information is posted on Facebook for anyone wanting to use public transport.
Some Sunday walks we have completed include: Malham Cove, Blackstone Edge, Gaddings Dam, Helvellyn (Lake District).

Our mid week walks will usually last from 1-2 hours with the distance being roughly 2 to 3 miles, depending on the route taken.
Our weekend walks are always different but usually last for 3-5 hours and the miles will vary depending on the location and route taken.
All information is always posted on Facebook events with our friendly Admin team available for any enquiries.

Walks to Suit

We rate all of our walks from Green to Red status, so people can have a general idea of the level of difficulty for each walk.
Green – A fairly light walk on level terrain (pavements or streets) usually lasting from 1-2 hours.
Amber – A slightly more difficult, longer walk lasting from 2-3 hours.
Red – A difficult walk that may include climbing lots of steps or mountain hiking, lasting from 2-4 hours.
Blue – Extremely difficult walk, mountain hiking for experienced walkers, lasting from 4-7 hours or possibly longer.

We like to provide as much information as we can so people can decide whether the walk is suitable for their ability.
